I thought I would share this with you to see if opinions are on the same
wave length as me.
I have had contact with a lady on my ICQ link.
She lives in Milton Keynes so not far, but not on doorstep.
She bought her daughter a pony 3 weeks ago.
14.1 cobby type, poss fellX.
She started to say she was concerned that the pony was a bit too strong
for her daughter.
Daughter is 12, recently been having lessons, just got stage to start
cantering, in riding school situation.
Mother used to ride years ago.
Father used to ride a bit.
The pony was in a Kimblewick when tried, but not by daughter, it was
tried by Father.
The lady who sold it to them was in North Northamptonshire, said used to
be ex RDA pony, in riding school near Birmingham, can't remember name.
Well, they first of all decided to change bit, as Kimblewick they did
not understand, also thought it was too tight.
Lady in a tack shop sold them Eggbutt Snaffle, said that would do the
trick!
Also sold them Martingale, as when they tried the new bit, pony keeps
throwing head around. Tack shop lady said Martingale would stop the pony
from shaking it's head.
Pony will not stand still at all to be groomed, not used to being
stabled, barges out at full pelt.
Beside that is easy to catch & Lead.
I asked her what age was it?
Well they had vet check it out first when arrived, told rising 7.
My first thoughts are this is not adding up right, ex RDA, not standing
still.
Only rising 7!. Who sold it can not remember what riding school it was
in, considering we are talking a few miles away from site sold to were
it was bought from.
Kimblewick ? depends as some kiddies have problem having strength,
skill, with strong ponies. I just have an uncertain gut feeling here.
The snaffle? with the Martingale for the reasons, I do not agree.
Yes if right, but this is a big difference.
I feel the pony is not happy with what is in it's mouth, but why is the
question. Teeth are sharp according to vet. So that is a first line to
sort.
Saddle? well lady is not sure if that fits.
Lots to be sorted here also, I think as well.
I did suggest, putting pony on lunge without rider, to see how it
reacted to the tack then, then without saddle.
Lady does not know how to lunge.
The yard she is in, are pestering them to ride the pony.
They gave her a lunge rein and sent her off to school.
But when she got there, was at a loss to know what to do.
I have said we will pop over to see this pony, but that is not till this
holiday.
I did ask her if they have riding instructor to look over pony, no do
not.
So I have got in touch with an ex instructor we know in her area, that
taught at Pony Club.
I think they have jumped before they can run!
So now they are there not sure about what they have taken on.
I do not think this pony is really suitable for there needs at all.
I think sharing, to start would have been better to gain more knowledge.
But I can not tell her that.
I think they were lied too on ponies history, it does not add up!
I think they are right to not have daughter riding it yet, till they
have supervision.
They need to spend time teaching it manners, firmly, but kindly.
Like walking in out stable.
Standing still when tied up.
The tack is a minefield.
So I believe, this may be a major factor to finding out how this pony
really goes.
Is it safe or not.
This lady made me realise just how much I do know, and that is far from
a lot.
Common sense, I think would have made them stop and think better, but
emotion took over.
I do think I have respect for her, in that she is willing to ask for
help, and listen to suggestions.
All thoughts gratefully received.
