Why do working trot?

I had a lesson - the first in years - last week and a few questions arose
which I didn't bring up with the instructor (lack of time).
Hope some of you will assist (and hope they're not really stupid questions
:-( ).
1. Why do working trot? Can't the horse "work" as much in a slower trot
as long as the hindlegs are coming through?
2. Shouldn't the contact strength be equal - even when turning?
3. Building up topline - is it "just" a matter of working in a correct
outline? Is long and low best (I haven't experience at this, but have
another lesson coming with another instructor)?
4. How much riding time is needed to develop topline? Is 3-4 schooling
sessions of 1 to 1.5 hours on sand a week enough?
Thanks for your time,
Jenny and Redhead.
